About this mod Machine translation

Just ported Cunning Linguist to SSE. it works. With this mode, you can find books that allow you to learn words of power in exchange for the dragon's soul.

The following is from seorin's mod The Crafty Linguist

This is a port of mine, a mod by seorin. All credit goes to him.

1.Description

This is a simple mode that adds a special book where you can learn new words of power by sacrificing dragon souls. There are also optional plugins that add additional support to the official DLC.

If you like this mod, you might be interested in my other mods: SPERG and NoDisarm. This was originally intended to be a SPERG perk, but I think it's a better standalone mode rather than a perk.

2.Installation

Extract CunningLinguist.esp and CunningLinguist.bsa into your Data directory. If you have the official DLC, also extract CunningLinguistDG.esp and/or CunningLinguistDB.esp. To uninstall, simply delete these files.

  • How it works

Once you find a book, you simply read it from your inventory to trigger the learn menu. For the main books, this is a list of all the words you can learn so far. The DLC books only teach words from one shout per person.

The cost to learn a word starts at 3 souls and doubles for each word in the same shout you learn. Learning a word from a quest or word wall does not affect this cost, so the first word you learn always costs 3 souls, even if it is the third word. A total of 21 souls are required to learn the sounds of all words: 3 for the first word, 6 for the second word, and 12 for the third word. The cost is determined individually for each shout, so even if you've learned 25 different words from learning, your first new word to learn still only costs 3 souls.

  • Call out the list

Not all voices can be learned through study. You can only learn words that are not part of the main plot, and words that are learned entirely on a single wall are omitted. Learning is not meant to completely replace the wall of text found in discovery. It's a complementary way to use extra dragon souls to gain new words without having to clear 50 different dungeons. The complete list of available shouts is below.

Skyrim Scream (14 episodes in total)

animal loyalty

Reiki Whisper

become brisk

disarm

frustrated

Elemental Wrath

Fire breathing (max 2 words)

Frost Breath

ice form

Kane's Peace

Marked for death

when slow

Call of the Storm

Whirlwind Rush (Episode 2 and 3 only)

DLC Shouts (3 in total)

Whirlwind (dragon chant)

Dragon aspect (dragon chant)

Drain vitality (Dawnguard)

  • Book a place

Books have been added to the appropriate loot lists so you will eventually find them from exploration. There's a copy of each book placed around the world, ensuring you can get your hands on at least one copy of the book with relative ease. The books are "hidden in plain sight" so you don't have to dig around to find the book, but it doesn't stand out either.

If you just want to jump right into learning words, you can use the console to add any or all books to your inventory. Use the help command to find its ID, or complete the FormID below using its position in the load order.

Original Game Shout: The "Ancient Draconic Lore" Discovered at the Arcanaeum of Winterhold College (**002DED)

Consume Vitality: "Draconic Myths & Legends" found in Volkihar Keep (*000800)

Whirlwind: The "History of Draconic Language" Discovered at the Severin Manor (**000800)

Dragon Aspect: "Draconic Apocrypha" (**0036D0) Found in Draven Rock's Temple

  • Mod Compatibility

This mod will not edit any existing projects, so there shouldn't be any conflicts. Books are added to the level list via script, so no merged fixes are needed.

  • Known issues

Walking up to the wall that can teach you a word you've already studied may be a few unusual little things. For example, words found in Arcwind Point will continue to glow even though it has no words to teach you.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
