About this mod Machine translation

Guards are less incompetent, being arrested is less burdensome, surprise attacks are more forgiving, and Thaneships are more valuable.

The Crime Overhaul changes the way Skyrim's guards deal with criminal activity:

Paying your bounty will never result in being transported to another location.

Escape from crime is now more challenging: guards who comment "Wait...I know you" will force the player to engage in dialogue. (Violent crimes will be treated with "stand your ground" dialogue.) Exiting this dialogue will be considered resisting arrest.

The greeting distance of all NPCs has been greatly reduced so you almost need to physically bump into a guard to be caught.

Crimes totaling below the "petty crime threshold" will not bring you to attention (unless they are warned.)

Guards who catch you while accidentally attacking someone (even themselves) and then surrendering will immediately let you go.

In most cases, sheathing your weapon will prevent normally friendly NPCs from attacking you, and accidental violent crimes will be forgiven. (The exceptions are when you commit an act of cannibalism or when your violent crime fine exceeds the threshold.)

Getting caught by a guard gives the player a 50% chance of getting the "I don't have time for this..." response, meaning you will be allowed to leave without paying a penalty. (This only happens if you encounter a defender without warning.)

Aela, Farkas, Skjor and Vilkas can now arrest players or claim bounties. This fixes the "endless forcegreet" bug that existed in vanilla Skyrim.

Additionally, the values for Crime and other settings have been changed to the following:

Steal: 5 x item value

Stealing a horse: 500

Become a werewolf: 1500

Attack on citizens: 200 (forgivable - see below)

Escape from prison: 500 (negated when escaping, see below)

Murder: 2000

Pickpocketing: 50

Trespassing: 300

Crime alert distance: 1000

Petty crime threshold: 300

Nonviolent crime bribery/on-the-spot arrest threshold: 1,000

Violent crime bribery/on-site arrest threshold: 2000

Number of clicks allowed to friends and allies out of combat: 3 (this setting may or may not have a noticeable impact - it seems to prevent citizens from aggroing when attacked, I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing, opinions welcome)

attack forgiveness

Any time you accidentally attack a normal friendly NPC belonging to any crime reporting faction, you can prevent yourself from being attacked by sheathing your weapon. If you haven't exceeded the small threshold for violent crime bounties, the fine for the attack will be waived. At this point, there is a 30 second window before subsequent attacks will be punished. Sheathing your weapon will continue to deter attacks, but if the amount you rack up on violent crime charges exceeds the misdemeanor threshold (see above), you must answer the guard and will not be exempted from further charges until you pay the fine in full.

Attacks on theft and other crimes can also be prevented by sheathing, but penalties for these crimes will not be excused. Attack forgiveness is disabled during jailbreak. (see below.)

THANESHIP

If you are a holder, you can get a weekly option to escape any number of nonviolent crimes or violent crimes up to the arrest sight threshold. This dialogue option resets after sleeping every seven game days. (All reservations are reset immediately, using this option will not affect the cycle.)

The default number of seven days can be changed by changing the global variable "CrimeOverhaulDaysUntilResetThane". This change will only take effect after the next reset date has passed and players have taken a break.

The seven-day cycle runs according to the calendar and is not reset by sleep. It's actually "once a week."

murder

Rewards for high violent crimes will no longer be paid by fines. To change this setting, set "CrimeOverhaulMurderPay" to 1.

Don't go, don't charge $200

High rewards for violent and non-violent crimes now have the potential to send players dire …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
