summary
Vanilla Alchemy relentlessly draws players toward a boring game style where you harvest every ingredient you find regardless of whether you actually need it or not, so there's no need to actually learn to discover and identify specific ingredients. Pick Your Poison changes that by providing a game-making guide that supports strategic and thoughtful alchemical foraging. 13-volume quantities are added to your inventory, letting you know what ingredients you need for any given effect, where to find them, and what they look like. All of this is without telling you the four alchemical effects of each ingredient - so no cheating!
The first 8 volumes list all the ingredients, divided into 8 categories, telling you where to find them and what they look like:
roll. 1: Fauna
roll. 2: fish
roll. 3: Flora
roll. 4: flowers
roll. 5: Fungi
roll. 6: Insects
roll. 7: Miscellaneous Notes
roll. 8: Supernatural
The remaining 5 volumes list all alchemical effects and which ingredients provide them:
roll. 9: Defense: Mage and Rogue
roll. 10: Fortification: Warriors and Miscellaneous
roll. 11: Healing and Resistance
roll. 12: Poison
roll. 13: Weakness and Manipulation
an example
Let's say you're playing an assassin and you want to stock up on some health-damaging poison. Your first step is to open "Pick Your Poison, Volume 12: Poisons," which is the first entry dealing with health-damaging poisons and tells you which ingredients you want:
harm health
Animals: Falmer Ear, Skeever Tail, Small Antlers, Troll Fat,
Fish: Betty River,
Flora:Crimson Nirnroot,Nirnroot,
Flowers: Deathbell, Nightshade, Poison Bloom, Red Mountain Flower,
Fungus: Imp Stool,
Supernatural: ectoplasm, human body, human heart, interstitial salts
The ingredients are divided into categories corresponding to Pick Your Poison, Volumes 1-8. Let's say you decide to find some toilet bowls first. So now you open "Pick Your Poison, vol.5: Fungi" and look at the poop:
Imp Stool
Solid creamy vapor with domed yellow cap. Found in the caves of Skyrim.
With this, you can now explore the caves in search of yellow mushrooms.

Install
There are two ways to install this mod. By default, books describe vanilla ingredients and effects, with their titles abbreviated to fit the narrow vanilla UI. If you don't have a problem with this, use method 1. If you use a mod or extension UI that changes the composition (such as SkyUI), you can use method 2 to run a patch to modify the books accordingly. Using either method, books will be added to your inventory when you start a new game or load an existing storage.
Method 1 - Vanilla ingredients and shorter titles.
Download and install the mod. Activate esp in your load order. Finish!
Method 2 - Modified ingredients and/or longer title.
Note that this method will not work if you use MO1 as your mod manager, as MO1 cannot launch zEdit (MO2 is fine and recommended).
Ingredient changing mods currently handled by patchers:
Alchemy, potions and food adjustments
Completed the Alchemy and Cooking Overhaul (although some ingredients are missing descriptions - but there are too many!)
- Install the mod and activate esp in load order.
- Install zEdit.
- Add patches to zEdit
- Open zEdit.
- On the upper right is a button that looks like 3 small cubes, click on it and it will display a list of currently installed patches.
- Click to install new patches. Navigate to PYP patches: it's where the mod is installed, in a folder called "zEdit patches". Install it and cl …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
