When you play as an archer or warrior, your character's strength can be expressed in several ways. You can upgrade your skills, choose perks and snap up better gear. This means you need to explore to deal more damage or absorb more damage.
As a mage, your progress is more limited: your skills only make your spells stronger, and higher-level spells can only be obtained from the Spell Merchant. High-level spell tomes cannot be found in the entire world. Enchantments can help, but not just for mage characters.
This disparity makes leveling up my mage game character very boring and monotonous.
The role of mod
First, this mod adds mastery and expert level spell tomes to the loot list. You can now find these items in loot, boss chests. These lists are unrated and are handled entirely by accident. This means no patches for Morrowloot or Skyrim Unleveled or even Requiem are required. To prevent any old friends from mastering super skills early on, I did something else too.
This mod adds new items to the game that you need to add to your inventory in order to be able to cast level spells with proficiency.
Expert level spells are also about 30% cheaper, for reasons I'll explain in another section.
These items can be found in boss chests, in certain hand-placed locations (many dungeons have at least one such item spawned), and rarely on slain mages or vampires.
If you lack the items required for a spell, the cost of the spell is roughly tripled. This only applies to proficiency and expert level spells. Novice, Apprentice, and Master spells are not affected by this mod, as mage characters need to have some firepower and are also viable targets to work towards.
However, just getting any of the special items introduced by this mod will not. You need to get the right one.
For spell proficiency, there are five items, each associated with a school of magic. These objects are called catalysts. For example, if you have Catalyst of Destruction, you can cast skilled spells without penalty. If not, activate the debuff mentioned above.
Expert level spells are significantly more powerful and therefore require more items to cast. Expert spells are also the main reason I developed this mod. Of course, just like proficiency in level spells, you'll need to catalyze magic of each school. However, for expert level spells, you need a high level of motivation. If you have a high Catalyst in your inventory, you can also freely cast skilled spells. This is done to prevent character-handicapping consequences of failed rolls for loot: you may be hit with a high catalyst when you really need a normal one, because your character won't know any expert-level spells at that point.
Expert level projects are more common than expert level projects.
All this talk-boosting may sound confusing, but it's getting better. For expert level spells, you need another item, the so-called Enigma. These mysterious items are also required to forge expert-level spells: only high-level catalysts will do. The puzzles relate to the type of magic in a certain school where a certain spell is cast. What type you might ask? For destruction it is an element such as fire. For example, the spell Incinerate requires both a high decomposition catalyst and a fire mystery in order to be cast in a player's ability without causing a debuff. Other schools follow the same pattern: the Restoration School's expert anti-necromancy and healing spells have their own mysteries, so these items need to be included in the inventory, along with the higher Restoration Catalysts.
I'm going to make a short list of what I'm explaining here.

Destroy the catalyst.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
