Advanced Unarmed Combat - Block and Bash
IMPORTANT: Regular users who installed the initial version should update to v0.4 to get the full benefits of the privilege.
Unarmed combat in Skyrim has one big flaw: you can't block when you're unarmed (like in Oblivion) and you can't interrupt enemy attacks. This means you basically have to go through an entire battle tank and hope that you do more damage to the enemy than they do to you, or run around endlessly waiting for an opportunity to attack without doing damage yourself. This mode gives unarmed fighters more options, allowing them to block and punch with their bare hands.
Please read the instructions before asking a question.
Features
- Added "Defensive Stance" to unarmed combat, allowing players to block (with limited effectiveness) and bash (just like you would with a shield or torch)
- Customizable hotkeys to switch between offensive (vanilla) stance and defensive stance
- Defensive stance also works in Brawl missions (can be disabled in MCM)
- Allows unarmed Killmoves to be performed in two postures
- Added slam kill in defensive stance (this is more of a side effect, but looks good)
- Optional Ordinator version so new unarmed perks work in both stances
how does this work
You can set a hotkey in the mod's MCM, which will allow you to switch between different stances. If you have a weapon/shield/torch equipped, the hotkeys won't do anything.
There are two positions:
- Offensive Stance: Basically vanilla unarmed combat, completely unaffected. You can hit enemies with either hand and perform vanilla "dual-wield" power attacks.
- Defensive stance: Your left hand is used for blocking and punching, you can only attack with your right hand (normal or power). It's like equipping a shield (in fact, technically, you have a shield equipped. See below.)
Under the hood, this mod uses a simple trick. An invisible "unarmed shield" item was added to the game (it has no name, so you won't see it in your inventory, and no grid, so it looks like your hands are empty). Unarmed armor has a lower armor rating, has no weight, has no value and has no armor type (it is considered clothing). When you press a key, the following happens:
- If you have nothing equipped in your hand, the Unarmed Shield is equipped, so you are now in a defensive stance.
- If you have the unarmed shield equipped, it is unequipped, so you are now in offensive (vanilla) stance.
Equipping any weapon (or shield/torch, since they use the same slot anyway) in either hand automatically equips the Unarmed Shield.
In the vanilla game, Killmoves for unarmed killing will only trigger if you have absolutely no weapons equipped. For this reason, I also added the possibility of triggering an unarmed kill when an unarmed shield is equipped (and only for this item).
Installation/uninstallation and requirements
This mod requires SKSE64 and SkyUI.
Just place the contents of the archive in the Skyrim SE "Data" directory and activate AdvancedUnarmed.esp, or even better use any decent mod manager.
To uninstall, do the opposite. This mod has 2 scripts, one for MCM/hotkeys and one that makes it impossible to use unarmed shields when equipped with a weapon. You can use a cleaner like Fallrim Tools to get rid of the remaining traces of the mod. Also, just to be safe, I would go back to an offensive stance before unloading, just in case.
compatibility
This mod does not edit any vanilla records, so it should not be directly incompatible with any other mods. By "directly" I mean no conflicting records, unless another mod adds a record with the exact same ID in the exact same location (which is very unlikely). Beyond that, I can't guarantee that absolutely everything will work as expected (the best examples are perk mods, see below).
Killmoves Mods (like VioLens): Vanilla unarmed kill moves are not modified …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
