getting Started

The Blackreach Refuge is accessible from Blackreach and is located on the lake near Derelict Pumphouse, below Raldbthar Deep Market. To enter, you need to use Initiate's Ewer during the Dawnguard DLC's main mission. If you've lost it or don't want to fix it, you can add one to your inventory via the console:

player.additem 0200a89e 1

If this command doesn't work, use the ID given to the project using this command instead of using 0200a89e of player.additem:

Help "Starting Ewer"

With the kettle in inventory, activate the altar in the outer chamber. This should open the door to the main area. Alternatively, if this doesn't work or you want to permanently remove the altar door, open the console, click on the altar door to locate it, and type disable. If the wrong content disappears, type enable to bring it back and try again.

There is an optional file that makes ewer weightless, available as ESL or ESP; may conflict with any mod that edits ewer directly.

detail

The central room of the home contains crafting stations, including a forge, smelter, workbench, grinder, tanning rack, cooking pot, furnace stove, enchantment station, alchemy station, axe, wood chopping board, and wheat grinder. All storage should be secure. There are also two dwarfs lingering in front of the fire; they are passive and come from the Vicn Creature Pack. If you don't want them underfoot, you can safely disable or kill them without causing any issues with the mod. (Actually, this applies to everything in the mod; if you don't like any static etc., you can safely get rid of them by opening the console, clicking on them and typing disable).

To the left is a room with a large number of Hearthfire growers, which should be enough to grow every growing item in the game. Past the planter you'll find an apiary and a bed with plenty of rest bonuses. There are some additional planted areas at the end of the room, with hints of Blackreach and Forgotten Vale flora. The tables in these areas contain some dwarven miscellaneous items and tools, as well as the key that unlocks the door to the avenue.

On the right is the one used in the Dawnguard main questline. The road leads to a network of other travellers, to and from Solitude, Markarth, Dawnstar, Falkreath, Winterhold, Windhelm, Ivarstead, Riften, Morthal and Whiterun. There is an additional exit from the central passage to the wilderness area between Bronze Water Cave and Nightgate Inn. To enter and exit wayshrines, you need the key to the room on the left and the Initiate's Ewer. (If you want to bypass hookah doors, you can use the console to disable them; if you want to bypass key-locked doors, you can use the console to unlock them.)

Wayshrines should activate the first time you enter the cell containing them. If you hear a rumble or the screen shakes for a few seconds, this is why. If a way won't activate and rise from the ground, that's something seriously wrong; you can try waiting 30 days outside to reset the cell and get back in, but if this happens please let me know so I can try to figure out why.

Technology and troubleshooting

This mod contains an ESP and some scripts, textures and mesh resources. Just add these to your mod manager (or data folder, if you like Living Dangerously) like you would any other mod. Also included is the source of the script where you can review or modify my embarrassingly clumsy attempt to ensure wayshrines are activated correctly. Loading order shouldn't be particularly important. If another mod edits a cell containing one of the wayshrine outlets, a conflict will occur; let me know and I can move the war or otherwise patch the conflict.

Due to the resources used, the base game and DLC are required.

This mod is designed with ELFX and ENB activation. So I'm not sure how reasonable a …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
