The first thing you need to know is that mods can and do cause conflicts. Every time a mod is added to the game, the potential for conflict increases. Not all conflict is bad, some conflict is necessary. However, if you don't deal with them in some way, it will eventually make your game unstable. How many mods does this require? The answer depends on the mod in question. Probably only two mods (in extreme cases). In most cases, if you only have 5-20 mods, your game will probably run fine. Once you start exceeding this limit, you'll need to start using tools to create your mod's load order.

Mods usually have .esp or .esm files that make up the load sequence. An example is Skyrim.esm from the main Skyrim game. If you own Skyrim Legendary Edition, the load order without any other mods will be: Skyrim.esm, Update.esm, Dawngaurd.esm, Heartfires.esm, and Dragonborn.esm. This is called a vanilla game. Vanilla games will work together as stable games. I say something because the vanilla game is full of "bugs" and/or inconsistencies. There are many bugfixes you can add to your game that fix and improve the playability of your game without adding any serious conflicts. However, they usually do increase your load order, and at some point you will have to sort the esm and esp files into the load order that best suits your game. This is where modding utilities come into play.

LOOT (Load Order Optimization Tool) is undoubtedly the first and most important tool you will need. It will look at all your esm and esp files and figure out the best order in which they should be loaded. This alone should solve many problems people have with mods. The more mods and esm/esp files you have, the more important this tool becomes.
