about

-------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

This repository contains PowerShell scripts and 64-bit PE binaries for 7-Zip

CLI tool for v18.05.

The PowerShell script finds every .7z and .zip file in a given directory, and

Repackage them using powerful compression algorithms. This can save hundreds

megabytes in the Downloads folder for premium users; but where it really shines is

When you use some kind of download package manager or mod manager

Less than the compressive strength of stars.

As a case I run this script on each folder

`%ApplicationData\Roaming\Vortex\Downloads`. My SkyrimSE folder (minus the .rar files)

From 26.6GiBs to 25.1GiBs - a saving of 1.5GiBs, or about 6%! Although 6% may

It doesn't look like much, a few files were reduced by over 25% after

Recompress. The reason the total is 6% and not 25% is because

Most of the 26.6GiBs are [thankfully] maxed out already. between

Vortex's SkyrimSE and Skyrim download folders, my user downloads folder,

I probably saved about 2GiB of space without deleting anything.

"Why would anyone use a weak compression algorithm?", you might be wondering.

Well, sometimes a weaker compression algorithm is useful -

Typically used for data that needs to be accessed frequently (a good example)

One use case for light compression is transparent, partition-level compression. ).

But that's what happens when you have a lot of archive data that you don't want to delete

Mainly collecting dust and repackaging it with more powerful compression algorithms

Can be a good thing.

usage

-------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

`$ archive-repacker.ps1

[path\to\directory\to\optimize]

[leave blank unless you want to pause after fetching]`

The option to pause after extraction is very useful - you can use it

For example, interrupt the period of time the texture optimizer is running and save more space.

notes

-------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

If you are still using a 32-bit operating system, you will need to download the 32-bit version of

7z.exe. The latest version can be found here:

The way this script is currently configured, the contents of each archive will

Modification date lost. This results in a slightly better compression ratio.

While this may be fine for end users, it's also unlikely for mod authors. if

You are using this script to optimize your own archive, you can keep it

Modify the date by removing all instances of `,' - mtc-''.

If you want to create an archive with these settings without using

In this script you can configure 7-Zip file manager to force the creation of

Compressed archives. To do this, create a new archive and use the following command

Options:

  • Archive format: .7z
  • Compression level: Ultra
  • Compression method: LZMA2
  • Dictionary size: 128 MB

(If you don't have much RAM, you may need to reduce this. Using 128MB DS, I

Each large archive uses approximately 4GiB of RAM. )

(Please note that the maximum capacity for 32-bit computers is 128MB.)

  • Font size: 273

(Afaik, there's no reason not to use the maximum here.)

  • Solid block size: Solid

(This makes a huge difference.)

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
