Why do I feel even worse? . . . update update
I'm considering redoing a big chunk of this mod. I'm currently running a compatible build on SSE and using the Interesting NPC as a test unpatched. The kids in that mod have no sheen and no gray issues. I did this by using a completely separate head mesh option so that children added by other mods would use the default face, while "modified" children would use a new head with character generation morphs. This will take some time as I revert some things back to vanilla for compatibility and ease of use reasons. I tried to do too much and burned myself out, now I'm ready to try diving.
Update 2017
Never thought I'd use this mod again, however, I'm working on the SE version, and while it should be more compatible with other mods that add children (though not ones that touch matches/existing children.) the nifs in this mod are a disaster with strings all over the place. I'm fixing all of them.
For those who know the more technical aspects of the SE version, I restored model space normals to tangent space for added compatibility. Also, the nifs have stripes in the skinned chunks, which don't work at all in SE, so I have to fix that and correct the strings so that I don't waste a ton of string numbers or those that exceed the string length. I've tested what I have in SSE using 3DNPC and the children added in the mod don't have gray faces. Both male and female children use unique heads, but can use the default head without facial morphing. This is for compatibility reasons. Therefore, there should not be glossy faces for children in other modes.
So in conclusion, there will be a SE version which should be more stable than this version and more compatible with other mods that add new children.
Thanks to AEscraed for making some patches for things like Interesting/Inconsequential NPCs and the Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch. It can be found here Update 13/06/2015 Old versions must be removed, including plugins such as SCOHearthfires and SCODragonborn. It's now an esp instead of esm, which means you can paste it anywhere in the load order. This should hopefully solve some problems. I've hit a wall regarding modding and I can't get past it. Therefore, this will be the last update for the indefinite future. The patch isn't coming, at least not leaving me anytime soon.
Updates about Mods
Just a warning. Make sure you have a save file away from where the children are or you might have some issues since I changed some of their clothes. Once the mod is loaded, everything should be fine.
Overhaul of children, adding transformations, new clothes and Mer-like children to create better immersion.
Now the mod starts. The goal is simple. I can make an elf child mod that retains the vanilla aesthetic. It's easy, just change the default sub.nif and give it pointed ears.
Of course, doing this would cause problems, but I was working with .tri before I decided to see if I could create morphs to create sprite children. Turns out I can. With six eyes deformed, I gave myself a pat on the back.
But I'm not satisfied with it. I extended this to vanilla children, creating a set of morphs (which took forever, but still had some issues) that covered everything the adult morphs had.
There are several children's models there. Here is a video showing some of them.

This mod is incompatible with any mod affecting children.
I wish I remembered all the files. If I forget, then there may be problems.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
