About this mod Machine translation

Skyrim inhales philosophy but rarely expresses it. Skyrim's Philosophy solves this problem by providing Tamriel with mostly friendly philosophy books. Dovahkin can now finally challenge his or her assumptions and become a critical thinker. This mod also adds five additional quests and an ancient riddle to solve.

important

I've updated the mod. In the first version there was an old dwemer tome in the Sleeping Giant Inn (I put it there for convenience and forgot to delete it), now I have deleted that tome. The latest version is: StoicBooks1.0.1

Introduction

This mod is for people who like philosophy, people who appreciate words, scavenger hunters and mystery solvers. This is neither a combat nor an npc mod. It doesn't add any actual NPCs (except simple vendors), nor does it add any new monsters. Neither has any texture changes. It only uses all assets from Skyrim Legend Edition.

The mod is a simple plugin file (with some other files) named stoicbooks.esp.

What does this mod do?

This mod adds:

5 other tasks

a businessman

Background to the practice of Tamriel philosophy

Ancient riddles waiting to be solved

philosophy books

These books are not created through simple copy and paste techniques. All texts have been carefully read and edited to ensure that they meet the following two criteria: intellectual friendly and readable.

Become lore-friendly by creating references to Elder Scrolls lore and adding context for philosophical practices. Achieve readability by editing the original text and transforming it into a way that is easier to read.

All of these books, except rare ones, have been added to the graded list. As such, you'll find them in loot boxes and can purchase them at certain vendors. Some books are also hand-placed in the game world.

Most of the fragments come from philosophers such as: Heraclitus, Parmenides, Plato, Descartes, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche and Wittgenstein. Others are authorial but inspired by Eloise, Pierre Abelard, Duns Scotus, Occam, Schopenhauer and Marcus Aurelius.

Task

The five miscellaneous quests are similar to the ancient Dawnguard's falmer tome quests. This mod provides hints about its location in an immersive way. If you find an ancient tome, it will trigger a quest (using drums, objectives, and markers). If you have any questions please let me know.

philosophical context

To this end, a context for philosophical practice was invented. This is reflected in the introductions to some translations of ancient philosophical works, the names of philosophical authors, written introductions to Tamrilic philosophy, and certain oppositions between authors implicit in the book. This will allow philosophy to flourish. It will make it feel real.

Merchant

If you don't want to go on a treasure hunt to collect all the books, all the common books can be found in Riverwood in the name of merchant Duns Scotus. However, rare books are difficult to obtain.

riddle

Hidden in these books is an ancient riddle. Solving this problem requires a scavenger hunt, following clues, using your brain, and some deduction. You'll be rewarded with loot, literature, and knowledge.

This mod is for scavengers, philosophy buffs, and book lovers. Don't expect any combat, monsters or political fanaticism with this mod, but there is a dungeon...

background

This is my first mod, all feedback is welcome. It started out as a simple way to add philosophy books to Skyrim in an immersive way. Instead of using a console, they can be found in games, on vendors, etc. But as I started tinkering with it, the idea evolved into something bigger. I share it with you now. Why am I sharing this? I've taken a lot from the modding community and now it's time to give something back. I hope you enjoy it! I also hope it inspires some of you readers to actually rea …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
