About this mod Machine translation

The performance requirements are relatively high! Use with caution in low configuration.

Open Cities Skyrim is a comprehensive project that aims to restore at least part of the feel of Morrowind - specifically the fact that most cities are a natural part of the world that you can walk into without loading screens. Increasing immersion and realism goes a long way, probably a lot more than you think. Ever wanted to ride your horse into the heart of Riften? Well now you can. Need some help from the city guards to defeat your enemies? Run towards the gate and the guards will do their job while you seek safety within the walls. The town guard makes for some very interesting interactions this way. This will also make fighting dragon battles more interesting, as the flow of combat won't be interrupted by loading screens, and all city guards can participate at the same time.

Installation requirements

Official Skyrim patch 1.9.32.0.8 or higher.

Requires official Dawnguard DLC.

Requires official Hearthfire DLC.

Requires official Dragonborn DLC.

In order to use the in-game configuration menu, SKSE 1.6.9+ and SkyUI 3.2+ are required. They are usually not necessary for the mod itself.

If you have ILS/CTD issues, SKSE 1.7+ is highly recommended. See the troubleshooting section.

Installation - Wrye Bash BAIN

Place the archive into the Skyrim Mods\Bash Installers folder and install as usual.

Make sure the mod is active in the Wrye Bash mods tab.

Installation - Mod Manager

Use the "Download with Manager" button on the Open Cities Skyrim page for Skyrim. The installer should take care of things from there.

Then just make sure NMM has the mod activated.

Installation - Manual

Place the Open Cities Skyrim.esp and Open Cities Skyrim.bsa files into the Data folder.

Activate the mod using whatever management tool works for you.

Post-installation configuration

Set the load order of your mods using the management tool you feel most comfortable with.

LOOT should set the correct loading order, this is the recommended approach.

You may also need to rebuild Bashed Patch if you use it.

Once the game loads, you need to allow 24+ playtimes for the AI to fully update in each city.

If you have SKSE and SkyUI 3.2+ installed, there are three options you can configure using the in-game menu.

Option 1: Oblivion Gate. Menus now allow you to turn them on or off on the fly as needed, without the need for external patches. If you have any such patches, uninstall them. They will now crash the game.

Option 2: Door attendant. The gates that open the city gates as you approach on horseback can be opened or closed as needed. Yes, some people despise them enough to ask for this. Don't ask me why.

Option 3: Outdoor lighting system. You can switch the status of the outdoor lighting system as needed. No one asked for this, but something occurred to me. I'm messing with MCM anyway, so why not.

These optional configuration elements will not be supported through any other mechanism, so if you are one of those people who irrationally hates SKSE and SkyUI, then you will have to endure using external patches to get in the door and you will not have access to completely uninstall the other two things.

Uninstall Open Cities Skyrim

Due to the nature of Skyrim mods, especially those that add scripts, it is strongly recommended not to attempt to uninstall mods from the active game. Any mod that is more than a pure mesh or texture replacement risks leaving permanent changes on your save that you may not want. This is not something that mold can correct. This is how Bethesda designs its games. There will be no support for anyone who uninstalls this mod from the active game and continues saving.

Load order

Open City Skyrim should be loaded as late as possible to preserve changes to navmeshes and other external city data.

LOOT should be used for optimal placement.

Compatibility patches

Official Dawnguard DLC - Available in the patch archive on the Open Cities Skyr …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
