This mod repurposes the clothing of female merchants into dresses and accessories that were popular in 10th century Denmark.

Historically accurate Nordic clothing

-Runestyr

Updated Standalone Version Update: Version 2 adds an optional standalone version, which was requested by some players using other mods that affect clothing. Most vendor NPCs who previously wore vanilla merchant clothing (as well as any modded NPCs using vanilla merchant clothing) will wear these outfits, which can be crafted and appear randomly in the world. Or in the console, type "help norse 4" to get the FormID. Because these are separate, they will not conflict with earlier versions of this mod that changed the vanilla dress.

To make a dress on a tanning hanger, you need 3 linens, a leather strip and an herb for color (hanging moss for green, snowberry for red), but no additional perks are required. The in-game names are "Norse Dress Red" and "Norse Dress Green".

Content: This mod adds a reimagined version of a female merchant's costume as a stand-alone garment with decorative embellishments and jewelry that was popular in places like 10th-century Denmark.

Why: When Skyrim came out 8 years ago, a re-enactor asked for historically accurate female costumes from the Norse culture (also known as the Vikings), who were based on loose-fitting clothing. As a cosplayer whose focus area is the Viking Age and a texture/model painter, I was able to satisfy the red and green Merchant's Clothes (females only) with a simple texture replacer that already had the correct general shape. I posted this on the forum at the time because the workshop wasn't real yet.

The artwork is my own, patterned after Danish Jelling Stone (who I have met in person). If you would like to use the artwork for something please contact me as my originals are of higher quality.

Future plans: I will make a male version when I have the time and computing resources. The men's clothing was different enough that I couldn't reuse previous work and had to build the model from scratch and then render the textures as if they were originals, which would be much easier when my main computer came back online.

Frequently Asked Questions (questions asked at least once during the workshop):

Q: Dude, I don’t think Northerners are real.

Answer: Apparently you didn't hear my wife's cry! But seriously, "Nordics" (people from the north) were real people who lived in Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and sometimes Finland and Iceland) who shared a unique culture and language during the Dark Ages. The "Norsemen" are a fictional people in Tamriel whose cultural traits are scattered among the Norsemen.

Q: Isn’t the color too bright?

A: Yes, if you like the original Skyrim colors, everyone seems to have not taken a shower or done laundry since last year's The Second Seed. I use Immersive Saturation Boost, which makes the colors brighter. But since several people feel this way, version 2 mutes the colors by reducing saturation by 15% and specularity by 50%.

Q: I would love to see more Viking artwork in the game!

A: I want to do more texture alternatives, my favorites are the Jelling and Ringerike styles, but where do you suggest I start?

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
