About this mod Machine translation

An homage to old-school role-playing games that adds some much-needed life to Skyrim's NPCs. Includes all new, fully voiced characters, branching dialogue and more!

Available now on Special Edition.

Overview

For all its efforts at designing its world, "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" is sorely lacking in other areas, most notably the quest design as well as how bland the writing is. The conversation exists as a personalityless exposition dump; there are only one or two options that produce the same result or message. There aren't any meaningful choices for the player, there's no "voice" for each option in the dialogue, allowing the player to build who they want in a given situation, just what Bethesda wants you to know, where to go and what to do when you get there.

Well, it's time to change that. Divinity

The successor to the original mode: Original Sin II, CoT adds 14 new characters to the world, each with their own unique personalities and dialogue that can branch out in a variety of ways. An homage to old-school RPGs, Citizen is a passion project I've been working on in my spare time, and adds some much-needed life to Skyrim's NPCs, not to mention giving players the chance to finally role-play and develop their own character in dialogue.

This mod pays homage to the likes of Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Divinity, KotOR, Dragon Age, VtMB and many more - games (and genres) that I love. Each character in Citizen is a kind of "Easter egg" that is unmarked and hidden in the world, allowing you to find it naturally as you play. This, in turn, will hopefully provide that feeling of discovery and that you'll encounter something special rather than just being forced to talk to them.

Each conversation is essentially a character study, allowing players to draw their own conclusions about the themes or events explored in the conversation without being explicitly told what they want or which path to take. Some encounters may be comical, and some of them may be fatally serious, but ultimately how you react to them and how they progress is up to you.

After all, that's what role-playing is about: choices and consequences. While the mod may be small, the goal is to make your world feel more alive with these characters and the experience of playing through it more meaningful. Each of them lives a real life, they have motivations and flaws... Ultimately, it's up to the citizens to engage with other humans, not robots, in the world and explore what they have to say about it.

Of course, writing can only be as good as the voice it relies on, and that works both ways. One of the main goals is to ensure that the quality of the vocalization is the best possible performance for each character. Each NPC is composed of a group of voice actors with new knowledge and experience in the community.

Manual

  • Download the archive and extract the files to a location of your choice.
  • Place everything into ../SteamApps/common/Skyrim/Data and make sure to preserve the folder structure.

You should go well. To uninstall, just delete the same files.

Mod Manager

As always. Installation/uninstallation is automatic.

The mod was tested extensively before release and is relatively simple with minimal scripting or bloat. If you encounter any problems, please make a post detailing the problem. I can't help you with the individual load order in terms of how it works with other mods, so the mod is provided as-is.

Audio files are as large as possible without compromising quality. If for some reason the sound on your speakers is too quiet, go to ../Documents/My Games/Skyrim/SkyrimPrefs.ini, under [AudioMenu] it is fval1 = 1 …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
