summary

Challenging Spelling Learning changes the bland vanilla spelling learning system to increase the challenge, risk and satisfaction of spelling learning. Rather than immediately "consuming" the spell book to learn the spell, reading the spell book will now begin a learning ritual that tests your magical abilities. Your enchantments are continuously depleted during the ritual, and to learn the spell you must complete the ritual without depleting your enchantments. Because rituals consume magic at a rate proportional to the cost of the spell, all but the most basic spells are effectively restricted to characters who don't need to invest in magic or magical skills. However, as your character improves, more and more spells will be at your fingertips, resulting in a natural progression from novice to proficient. despite this,

Here is a video showing the mod in action. First, low level warriors are unable to learn novice destruction spells, then low level mages attempt the same, but succeed due to their feats and equipment. Finally, the same mage attempts to learn the apprentice change spell, but fails.

Working principle

The first time you read a spell book, a menu opens asking if you want to try to learn the spell. If you select "Yes", the inventory will close and the character will begin learning the ritual (including beautiful animations and visual effects). During the ritual, you have no control over your character, and their enchantments are consumed at a rate proportional to the spell's cost. After 10 seconds, if your character has any magic left, they will gain the spell and regain their lost magic. However, if they run out of magicka and become knocked out and mentally exhausted, the disease reduces total magicka and greatly reduces magicka regeneration rates.

The rate at which magic is lost during the ritual is proportional to the casting cost of the spell, which can be configured via the MCM (see configuration section below). The ritual cost takes into account all relevant perks, enchantments, spells, and potions that affect your character. Therefore, if your perks reduce the casting cost of the spell you are trying to learn, they will similarly reduce the rate at which spells are lost during the ritual. Mana drain can also be countered by resisting mana potions or wards. Therefore, to learn a master level spell, you will need to take any relevant perks, wear the appropriate enchantment gear, drink magic-restoring water and/or resist magic potions, and invest in your total mana pool as you level up.

After the ritual is over, you keep the tome of spells. So if you fail, you can try again when your character is ready. If you succeed, reading the spell tome again will cause you to forget about the spell, which is useful for cluttering your spell inventory (it won't work for fire or healing that bakes into your character).

Configuration

MCM allows you to change every aspect of your spelling learning habits. The ritual cost can be changed via two parameters: exponent and multiplier, where

Ritual cost per second = 7.5 + ((spell casting cost / 12) ^ exponent) * multiplier

Higher index values cause spells to become more difficult to learn as the casting cost increases (as well as making spells harder to learn), while lower values make all spell rituals cost the same regardless of the spell's casting cost (as well as making spells easier to learn). Multipliers make a spell easier or harder to learn, but …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
