After leveling up, the mission starts when you change locations. If you are already at least level 10 when you install the mod, you can simply move it somewhere else (such as to a new town) to start the mission.
You should receive a letter via courier.
What can she do?
She's not meant to fight enemies (but she might decide to attack anyway, I haven't looked into that part yet), instead you can ask her to help you with annoying chores.
Currently includes:
Observe all enemies you kill and keep track of them for up to 5 minutes (configurable)
When you ask her to track all tracked enemies, loot them and return them to you
