RenoDX – Silent Hill F HDR Repair

🎮 **This is a ReShade plug-in, not a ReShade effect**

⚡ **The module requires HDR to be turned on in the game to be used**

✨ Fixed HDR issues

1. Color grading repair

The game makes heavy use of color grading LUTs created in an external program (probably OCIO). Color grading LUTs allow developers to bake complex contrast curves and color filters into texture files and then apply them to the scene. Unreal Engine's default HDR code does not support external HDR LUTs, nor does its HDR code path provide code for applying SDR LUTs in HDR like many other games do. **The LUT builder shader has been modified to apply SDR color grading LUTs in HDR, allowing us to see the developer's true artistic intent**.

2. Tone mapping consistency

The game uses a different tone mapper in HDR (a broken ACES implementation) and is missing various controls in its SDR tone mapper (Unreal Filmic). Developers can choose to apply certain adjustments to the tone mapping curve in SDR, but due to the lack of proper controls for HDR, these adjustments will not be reflected in HDR. The tone mapper has been replaced with a mix of Unreal Filmic and our custom ACES implementation. **This allows for consistency with artistic intent in SDR, while having extended highlight detail and wide color gamut support**.

3. SDR EOTF simulation

In SDR, the game encodes the final image to sRGB gamma before sending it to the monitor. This encoding may not match the actual gamma curve used on developer monitors, as essentially every monitor on the market ships with 2.2 gamma. This means that in SDR, a gamma mismatch causes the image to receive a contrast boost in the shadows, which is not present in HDR. Now emulates sRGB -> 2.2 gamma conversion in HDR, **increasing contrast to match what we think the developers actually wanted the game to look like when developing in SDR**. This is also supported by severe color banding on UI elements, now fixed with 2.2 gamma simulation**.

4. UI Mixing

In HDR, the UI and scene are in different formats (linear) when blended together, while in SDR it's in gamma format. This is noticeable with transparency effects, as they often appear too transparent in HDR, affecting readability. Fix this by encoding the UI and scene into gamma space before blending, thus preserving the original UI blending behavior.

🎛️Adjustment options

*Note: Most sliders do not apply in real time, open the journal to trigger a shader rerun for them to take effect*

  • **Tone mapping type**: UE ACES (original HDR), None, Vanilla+ (ACES + UE Filmic hybrid), UE Filmic (SDR)
  • **Peak, Game and UI Brightness**
  • **SDR EOTF simulation/UI SDR EOTF simulation**
  • **Tone Map Scaling**: Tone map by luminance or per channel
  • **Tone Correction**
  • **Color Grading**: exposure, highlights, shadows, contrast, saturation, highlight saturation, overexposure, bloom
  • **LUT Strength**
  • **LUT Scaling**: When the LUT is boosted, scale the black floor to the full range
  • **Grain Type/Strength**: Vanilla or Perceptual (does not work with FSR frame generation)
  • **Lilium RCAS Sharpening** (does not work with FSR frame generation)

⚠️ Known issues

  • The sliders in the "Tone Mapping & Color Grading" section are not applied in real time. Open and close the journal to apply changes.
  • Using this plugin with some ReShade shaders (such as Lilium's shaders) may cause a crash

🔧 Compatibility

  • External DLLs/injections such as Optiscaler/SpecialK/PureDark FG may not work, please test without them first to confirm if the mod is working properly. In this case, I can't make any guarantees about compatibility, since all of these mods and RenoDX are hooked into the game at a low level.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
