Double-tap Space to break free when grabbed during Q-triggered tumble in R.E.P.O.

About this mod Machine translation

BreakFree

If you hate being held and not letting go, then you really need this mod. After all, maintaining a little personal space is a very reasonable thing to ask for when you're being tossed around in R.E.P.O. by teammates, enemies, or some overzealous physics-grabbing enthusiast.

Feature overview

BreakFree is a lightweight BepInEx + Harmony module that is used to give players a "Don't touch me, I'm getting up" button combination in a specific downed state:

  • Only takes effect after you actively trigger the tumble/downed state via Q.
  • When another player is grabbing you, allows you to force your way out by double-clicking the space for a short period of time.
  • Breaking free will follow the release and stand-up process of the original version of the game, minimizing interruption to the original behavior.
  • Provides diagnostic logs to easily determine whether the module has been loaded, detected falling to the ground, detected grabbing, and whether the release request was successfully sent.

How to use

  • Press Q in the game to automatically fall to the ground.
  • If another player catches you, don't panic and don't start chanting ancient spells in your voice.
  • Double-click the space within 2 seconds.
  • The module will force the release of the grabber and request the original version of the game to stand up.

To put it simply: Q fell to the ground → was caught → Space Space → “Thank you, no date.”

Operational process

BreakFree monitors and supplements PlayerTumble's original logic through Harmony patch. The core process is as follows:

  • Patch PlayerTumble.Update: Check whether the breakout conditions are currently met when the player updates the tumble status.
  • Patch PlayerTumble.TumbleSetRPC: Track tumble status via RPC synchronization, especially in multiplayer games where non-host clients may not get full local input tokens.
  • Use isTumbling to determine if the player is still tumble/downed.
  • Use isPlayerInputTriggered or RPC tracking recorded by the module to determine whether the fall was actively triggered by the player pressing Q.
  • Use playerGrabbing to determine if other players are grabbing the current player.
  • When a double-click on a space is detected within 2 seconds, the original ReleaseObjectRPC is called on the qualified crawler to release the crawl.
  • Call TumbleRequest(false, true) after successful release, allowing the game to continue with the original TumbleStop/stand up process.

In other words, this mod doesn't eject you out of thin air, but tries to follow the original RPC and stand-up path: it just helps you say "let go" more politely and firmly.

Configuration

BepInEx will be generated in the configuration directory:

BepInEx/config/com.breakfree.repo.breakfree.cfg

Available configurations:

  • [Diagnostics] EnableDiagnostics: Whether to enable diagnostic logs, default true.

If you think [break free] is too confusing in the console, you can change it to false. Important warnings and errors will still be preserved where possible.

Install

r2modman

It is recommended to install using or r2modman. Once you choose to install BreakFree, just launch R.E.P.O. with BepInEx.

Manual installation

If you prefer manual operation, you can also install it like this:

  • Make sure BepInExPack for R.E.P.O. is installed.
  • Create a directory:

BepInEx/plugins/BreakFree/

  • Place BreakFree.dll into this directory:

BepInEx/plugins/BreakFree/BreakFree.dll

  • Start the game.

Log troubleshooting

If the mod doesn't seem to be working, search the BepInEx console or log files for:

[break free]

Commonly available information includes:

  • Whether the Harmony patch was successfully applied.
  • FieldRef / Whether private field access is initialized successfully.
  • Whether TumbleSetRPC is observed.
  • Whether to record the first space.
  • Whether double-clicking on a space is detected.
  • Whether the RPC to release the grabber was called.
  • Whether the original stand-up process is requested.

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin

  1. The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
  2. Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
  3. Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
  4. Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.

Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file.

Dependencies

Install these first, or the mod will not work:
