Added over a hundred environmental horse coat colors to the game

environmenthorse

Tired of always seeing the same fifteen horses around town or in the wild? This mod is for you! 🎉 It not only greatly increases the number of horses in the environment, but also removes ugly horses that break immersion. You can even remove horse breeds that do not fit the era, such as Turkmen horses. My goal is to make each horse unique, whether it's through markings or coat color, so every now and then there's a few standout guys. Certain coat colors are rarer than others, with black and chestnut being the most common, while white, palomino and blue sand are extremely rare.

🐎 Horse breeds and changes in the module

Below is a list of all horse breeds included in the mod and their changes. Please note that 99% of the coat colors are custom made by me using original textures and colors to improve compatibility with other horse mods:

  • **Quarter Horse** - A fixture of the Wild West, this is the most common horse breed you'll see on NPCs.
  • **Missouri Fox Trotter** - These horses were more common in the Old West. In my opinion, the original foxtrotter model was a bit ugly, so I used Baylock's model instead.
  • **Mustangs** - I used Maggie's model for the mustangs and gave them a more normal looking mane to blend in better with the other horses, as well as removing the hoof hairs. They are also commonly found in the wild and have a chance of being thinner than regular horses.
  • **Tennessee Walking Horse** - This breed has remained basically the same, but now there are slightly more variations in the environment.
  • **American Saddle Horse** - Similar to the Tennessee Walking Horse. I don't really like how this breed looks in the game, so they are rarer than some other breeds.
  • **Morgan Horse** - As a more flamboyant horse breed, you'll see them less often than most horses; I've also adjusted their size to make it more reasonable.
  • **Thoroughbred** - More common than the Morgan, this breed I keep mostly the same.
  • **Arabian Horse** - The rarest horse breed that NPCs ride. Since they are supposed to appear rarely, I gave them a rarer coat color.
  • **American Pinto Horse** - These horses can be found in the wild or ridden by NPCs, although in the wild they are usually skinnier and have messier manes.
  • **Appaloosa** - While these horses are commonly ridden by Native Americans, NPCs rarely ride them, you find them more often in the wild, and they will be thinner. I used the model from my Appaloosa mod.
  • **Mules** - Mules spawn in their normal position, but I added some variation (although this was very difficult due to the way the fur was treated) while increasing their size and they can often be seen pulling carts.
  • **Sharma** - Pretty much the same as the original, though you'll see them less often.
  • **Belgian Draft Horse** - I added an extra coat color and changed their mane, and that's basically it.
  • **Perch Horse** - Very rare to see them pulling carts.

⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTE

Due to the way this mod works, if you see a horse you like, use the optional standalone file and look for the horse you find, otherwise the horse will change every time you die/reset the game.

Also worth noting is that I couldn't get the status card to work properly, so the breed name of the horse may not reflect what it actually is. The status of these horses will be that of ordinary horses, so you can't just steal an Arabian horse and immediately have a top-notch horse.

The master file does not change the horses used in stables or random encounters, so I recommend using the standalone file in conjunction with this mod for the best experience.

**PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING**: This mod has a bug that causes the Native American horses in the "My Last Son" quest to become invisible. I plan to fix this, but probably won't upload it to this page.

📥 Installation method

Place the file into your `LML > stream` folder.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
