AncestralRest
Leave an item in any legacy chest, and after 24 in-game hours it transmutes into its legacy version — right there in the chest. No heir character, no reroll. The ancestors do their work while you adventure.
Uses the game's own per-item legacy data, so every legacy pair in Outward Definitive Edition works automatically — base game, DLC, and DE additions alike (110 pairs, full table below).
How it works
- Travel to any legacy chest and place an eligible item inside (the vanilla chest UI, exactly as normal).
- Let 24 in-game hours pass — sleep, travel, adventure; the clock is game time and survives saving, quitting, and reloading.
- Return to the chest (its area must be loaded for the change to occur). The item transmutes into its legacy version, enchantments carried over.
Chained legacies work unattended: a Pearlbird Mask left resting becomes a Black Pearlbird Mask after one rest, then a Jewel Bird Mask after a second — 48 hours total without touching it.
Configuration
BepInEx/config/com.spencer4792.ancestralrest.cfg (created on first launch):
- HoursRequired — in-game hours per rest (default 24)
- CheckIntervalSeconds — how often chests are checked (default 2)
Utility keys
- F11 — diagnostic dump to the BepInEx log: all legacy pairs in your build, visible legacy chests and their contents, and every resting item with elapsed time.
- Ctrl+F11 — emergency evacuation: pulls every item out of visible legacy chests into your bag using the game's own retrieval call. Handy if a chest ever ends up in a confused state (e.g., from other mods).
Notes
- Rest progress is tracked per item and stored outside the save, keyed to game time — it survives full quits.
- The transmutation fires the next time you're in the chest's area after the rest completes. Time spent away still counts.
- Solo-focused; untested in co-op.
- The vanilla legacy-heir system is untouched — this mod adds a path, it doesn't replace one.

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin
- The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
- Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
- Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
- Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.
Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file.
Install these first, or the mod will not work:
