An Officer And Gentleman Officer Hat Replacement

This mod (mostly) does what it says, replacing most line and light to medium chambered Shako head gear with slightly tweaked tuning for all nations in the Napoleonic Wars.

Skirmishers, grenadiers and most escort infantry were unaffected and retained their shakos or distinctive helmets. British and French Ensigns were the only units to wear the new hats. All other soldiers still retain their original DLC headgear.

Why should I do this? Well, the play chamber can be pretty hectic, or trying to keep track of this officer when your line gets into the melee suddenly becomes a real chore, especially when the hat he's wearing looks more or less like that from behind. Also, I just think bicornered hats are associated with people who are higher in status than captains and naval people look good though.

It also makes players and leading players the leaders of new legions or new players in general who cannot differentiate between officers and others on the field.

Now I'm not going to lie, it's obvious that this mod isn't historically accurate or correct, and since I'm limited to the refurbished Austrian twins and the already provided listening devices from the DLC I thought I did a pretty good job with the first timer. An apology to those who were annoyed that Austrian partisans played Prussia or Russia but were better than the French?

Additionally, this mod comes in two flavors. One is simple line infantry and one is line infantry, most countries are light and medium. Most of the heavy tanks of all nations remained unaffected due to the obviously more sophisticated helmets they used.

Installation is very simple, just put all or just one desire faction into the NW resources folder. If you want shakos back, remember to put said folder back somewhere safe.

Additionally, this mod is open source. Meaning if you think you can improve it with some custom mods and go ahead and try, I wouldn't object. Hell I'd even host it because I'd love the Prussians and Russians with their correct bicorn skins. If someone could figure out a way how to modify the hat on a heavy duty mold cavity and provide me with a common Polish Lancer hat with a lid on it I could greatly expand on this mod.

I would also consider investigating a version that gives your officers a Bicorn or regular shako if possible, as well as rolling out a cavalry-only version. Enjoy now!

Remember to back up your assets before downloading in case you want to go back to old Shakos! If installed on other client reskins I think it would only override the officer skin's caps but leave everything else intact. Before trying to be safe, please back up your Napoleonic Wars resource files.

This mod does (mostly) what it says, replacing the slightly tarted up regulation Shako head gear of most line and light to medium cav for all the nations in Napoleonic Wars.

Skirmishers, Grenadiers and most Guard Infantry are untouched and retain their shakos or unique head gear. British and French Ensigns are the only other units wearing these new classier hats. All other soldiers retain their original DLC head wear still.

Why …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
