About this mod Author’s original text
The Free Company
A mercenary clan for Monster Train 2: sellswords and hedge-mages who took the last
contract on offer. Martial steel and arcane craft, paid up front.
⚠ ALPHA
This clan is playable but unfinished, and I am publishing it at this stage on purpose:
I would rather have real games behind it than keep guessing on my own. What helps most is
bug reports and an opinion on the balance of the champions, the units and the spells.
Most of the content has never been played outside my own runs, so expect rough edges and
numbers that are off. If you want a polished experience, wait for a later version.
Found something, or think a card is absurd in either direction? Either place works:
- GitHub issues:
- The modding channel on the Monster Train Discord:
A screenshot and what you were doing is plenty. If the game logged something, the file is...\BepInEx\LogOutput.log.
The two champions
Roderic, a captain who holds the line, hands out equipment or takes the loot.
Vesper, a hedge-mage who gives you free spells, keeps your units alive, or tames a troll.
These two screens are where feedback helps most: the numbers on the third tier are guesses.
The cards
Units, spells, rooms, equipment and artifacts, built around three pillars: formation,
loot and gold.
Known rough edges
- Balance is unmeasured. Some cards have never been drafted in a real run.
- The three card frames are still the ones from StewardClan (see credits).
Thanks
Big thanks to Brandon, Chéradénine, fohnjarmery, lostone, and to everyone else
on Discord's MT2 mod channel ( for testing The Free Company and pointing out what broke.
Since has no comments, feedback is best on Discord or on GitHub issues:
Credits and license
Runs on Trainworks Reloaded
and Conductor, both by the
Monster Train 2 Modding Group (MIT). This clan would not exist without them: Trainworks loads
every card, unit and champion from JSON, and Conductor adds effects the base game does not have.
Built on the scaffolding of StewardClan,
the official example mod by the Monster Train 2 Modding Group — MIT, Copyright (c) 2025.
Its three card frame textures (BorderUnit, BorderSpell, BorderEquipmentRoom) are still
in use here and are their work. Everything else — the cards, units, champions and relics, and
the custom effects in the DLL — is my own. Full licence in LICENSE, detail in NOTICE.md.
The Free Company
Me

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- Most mods rely on the game's mod loader — the usual route is a community mod manager (such as r2modman): pick this game, install, and it handles the loader and dependencies.
- For a manual install, put the mod files into the matching Mod / plugins folder inside the game directory.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; mods with listed dependencies need those installed as well.
Install locations vary a lot between mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
Install these first, or the mod will not work:
