Save the game after the opening scene

Directly create an unadded archive before you accept your first mission.

Content introduction:

This save will skip the ship scene, the zorah magdaros scene and everything until you accept your first mission. I selected the default male character (named Jim), the default palico (named Dragonator), and the default weapon.

Installation method:

Download the mod and unzip it. I recommend 7-Zip but you can use whatever you like as long as it can decompress .zip files.

Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<user ID>\582010\remote, or wherever Steam is installed (this is the default location for Windows).

Delete the two extracted files into the folder, they should be "SAVEDATA_B" and "SAVEDATA1000". As far as I know, you only need the second one, but I'm including both just to be safe.

Now you need to use a Steam profile to make these saves. Go to this website and paste your Steam profile URL into the box (there are better, more detailed guides on how to find this elsewhere). You need your steamID64, a 17-digit number. Copy it.

Download AsteriskAmpersand's save editor  and open the save. Replace the SteamID there with the 17-digit string you copied earlier.

Save the file to the location in step 1, select Yes to overwrite the existing file, and wait for it to save before closing the editor.

Launch the game and the save should work for you.

If you want to edit your Palico, you'll need to use a cheat engine sheet (found here) and fiddle with the settings, which appear to be invisible until reloaded (can be done by entering your room). There is also a Free Character Editing Voucher, but as the page says, it can only be used to edit a character once.
