Opening a Present is a gamble: instead of loot, it can burst open to reveal a hostile monster or a live trap.

What it does

  • Booby-trapped presents — only Presents are affected; every other item is untouched. On opening, a chance decides whether it gives normal loot or something dangerous.
  • Monsters or traps — a triggered present spawns a small monster or a live trap (Landmine by default; Turrets and Spike traps are opt-in) instead of its loot.
  • A beat of suspense — the box opens empty first, then after a short configurable delay the monster or trap appears, so there is a moment to react.
  • Any monster on any moon — the monster pool is built from every loaded enemy, so the same moon no longer keeps handing you the one enemy it happens to list; the pick is genuinely random.
  • Inside / outside aware — outdoor monsters won't be dropped into the facility and vice-versa, with options to relax or fully ignore that rule.
  • Allow / block lists for monsters, plus per-type toggles for traps, so you decide exactly what can appear.
  • Open-only-on-the-moon rule — an optional setting that only lets presents be opened while landed on a moon and standing outside the ship.
  • Per-moon ignore list and separate monster / trap chances for fine control.

How it works

  • A server-side hook on the present-opening routine runs the roll once, on the host.
  • On a hit it suppresses the vanilla loot and opens the box with the game's own "empty present" routine, so the box plays its normal particles and sound and is cleanly removed from the opener's hand for everyone, then spawns the entity at the present's position after the delay.
  • Monsters spawn through the game's own enemy-spawn method; traps through the standard networked spawn. No custom network objects, so no NetcodePatcher is needed.
  • The monster pool comes from every loaded enemy filtered by the allow/block list, so any allowed monster can appear on any moon.

Multiplayer (host-authoritative)

Only the host rolls and spawns; clients never decide on their own, so everyone sees one authoritative result. Monsters and traps are spawned server-side and replicate to all clients, and the box is opened through the game's own networked routine so it disappears from the opener's hand for everyone. The host must have the mod; install it on everyone so the whole lobby shares the same config.

Requirements

  • BepInEx 5.4.21+
  • Lethal Company V81
  • StarlancerAIFix by AudioKnight — keeps spawned enemy AI behaving correctly.
  • NavMeshInCompanyRedux by TRizzle — provides navmesh so spawned monsters can path where presents are opened.
  • Optional: LethalConfig for editing settings in-game.

Installation

  • Mod manager (r2modman Mod Manager): search for the mod and click Install; the dependencies are pulled in automatically.
  • Manual: install the BepInEx pack and the required dependencies, then drop DangerGift.dll into BepInEx/plugins.

Configuration

File: BepInEx/config/Timofey.DangerGift.cfg (created on first launch). Every setting can also be edited live in the LethalConfig menu.

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin

  1. The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
  2. Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
  3. Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
  4. Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.

Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file.
