The United Nations Peacekeeping Force is a cross-border special force established in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions. It was established in 1956 during the Suez Crisis. United Nations peacekeeping began in June 1948, when the Security Council authorized the deployment of United Nations military observers in the Middle East. It is appointed by the United Nations General Assembly or Security Council and is active in areas of international conflict. The mission is tasked with monitoring the Armistice Agreement between Israel and its Arab neighbors - an operation known as the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization.
