SpongesQOL

v1.0.0·Updated 2026-09-07

Stack identical items in one slot, keep more dropped items in your save, and a dated backup history you can restore from.

Sponge's QOL

Three fixes for three small, daily annoyances.

What it does

Item stacking

Identical items share a slot instead of each taking one, up to 10 by default. It

works even when your inventory is completely full: picking up another of something

you already carry adds it to that stack rather than being refused. That is the case

stacking is actually for.

Fish never stack, on purpose. Every fish has its own weight, and its weight is

what it is worth — merging two would quietly destroy the value of the heavier one.

The same goes for tools, which carry their own attachments and wear, and for quest

items. Only plain, genuinely interchangeable items stack.

Take one from a stack and a fresh one appears in the slot behind it, so the count

goes down by one and everything else stays put.

The game's own save is untouched: it still stores one item per slot exactly as it

always did, and only the count is kept beside it. If you ever remove this mod, your

stacks collapse to one item each and you lose the extras, but your save itself is

never at risk.

Dropped items stop vanishing

The game keeps at most 64 dropped items in a save, then sorts by category and

discards the rest without telling you. If you have been stockpiling on the shore,

that limit is why things are missing after a reload.

This raises the ceiling — 256 by default, up to 2048. Everything else is still

decided by the game: the same rule about what counts as saveable, the same ordering,

the same conversion. Only the ceiling moves, so it cannot corrupt a save; in the

worst case it writes a bigger one.

It is not free. Every extra item makes the save bigger and the load slower.

Save backups

The game writes its save carefully and keeps one rolling backup beside it. That

protects you from a write failing halfway. It does not protect you from yourself:

the moment you save again, the good copy is gone.

This keeps a dated history instead, in its own folder, and never touches the game's

own files unless you explicitly restore one. A backup is taken every time the game

saves, autosaves included, and the 20 most recent are kept.

Restoring only works from the main menu. With a game running, the save is held in

memory and would be written straight back over the restored file at the next

autosave — so the list tells you to quit first rather than pretending to work.

Restoring is itself reversible: the save being replaced is backed up first.

Backups are plain files under SpongeBackups in your save folder, one folder per

save, with the timestamp in the filename. You can copy them somewhere safe or read

them yourself, and the history survives this mod being reinstalled.

When you want it

Any of the three on its own is reason enough. Stacking and the item limit matter most

if you hoard; backups matter most if you have ever lost an evening to a bad save.

Keys

| Key | What it does |

|---|---|

| F10 | Open the backup list |

In the list: ↑ ↓ choose a backup, ← → switch between saves, Enter

restores, Esc closes. Rebindable in the config.

Every setting is also on the Quality of life tab in Sponge's Mod Menu, which

opens on F5.

Settings

| Section | What it covers |

|---|---|

| Stacking | On/off, stack size, whether to write the count on the slot |

| World items | On/off, the item limit, whether to keep live fish |

| Backups | On/off, autosaves, how many to keep, the key |

Keep live fish is off by default. The game deliberately drops those, so turn it on

only if you specifically want live fish to survive a reload.

Multiplayer

Only the host's settings matter for stacking and the item limit, since the host owns

inventories and writes the save. Guests see their own stack counts because the host

tells them. Backups are local to you.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. Most mods rely on the game's mod loader — the usual route is a community mod manager (such as r2modman): pick this game, install, and it handles the loader and dependencies.
  3. For a manual install, put the mod files into the matching Mod / plugins folder inside the game directory.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; mods with listed dependencies need those installed as well.

Install locations vary a lot between mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
