by Lucivar333·v1.1·Updated 2025-12-15

This mod swaps the shield spell (Protego) and the combat input keys of the tools menu (swapping L1 and triangle keys). Therefore, it also changed the ancient magic finishing move from L1+R1 to triangle key+R1 to avoid key mapping conflicts. All other L1/Triangle inputs remain unchanged, including the spell menu (R2+Triangle/Diamond/X/O).

Swap L1 and Triangle for Protego (for Controller)

🎮 **This modification should work on Playstation and Xbox controllers. **

Since I'm using a PS5 controller, the description will be based on the Playstation layout.

---

✨ Function introduction

This is a simple modification to the `Input.ini` file, which swaps the input keys for **Shield Spell (Protego)** and **Tools Menu** in combat (i.e. swaps L1 and triangle keys).

As a related adjustment, in order to avoid key mapping conflicts, the keys for the **Ancient Magic Finishing Move** have also been changed from **L1+R1** to **Triangle+R1**.

**PLEASE NOTE**: L1/Triangle input remains unchanged in all other situations, including the spell menu (R2 + Triangle/Diamond/Circle/X).

---

📝 Instructions and precautions for use

  • **Tool Menu Action**: Holding down the triangle key opens the radial item menu, but releasing the key does not close it. While selecting an item, **tap R1 to close the menu**.
  • **Known minor issues**: As mentioned above, you need to press R1 to close the item/tool menu after opening it. This might actually be more convenient, since holding Triangle and operating the right stick at the same time is inherently awkward.

---

⚙️ Installation method

  • Unzip the new `Input.ini` file.
  • Use it to replace the original file in the "Hogwarts Legacy" game directory (usually located at: `Users/your account name/Appdata/Local/Hogwarts Legacy/Saved/Config/WindowsNoEditor`).
  • **⚠️ Key steps**: After replacing the file, and **before starting the game**, right-click on the new `Input.ini` file, go to "Properties", and make sure the "**Read Only**" checkbox is checked. The default may already be yes, but be sure to check.
  • *If not set to read-only, the modified key settings will be automatically restored to default values when the game is started. *
  • If you want to restore the default key settings, just uncheck the "Read-only" option.

❓ FAQ

**Q**: I replaced the `input.ini` file, but the keys did not change after launching the game?

**Answer**: Please refer to the instructions above. **After placing the new file into the `WindowsNoEditor` folder and before launching the game**, make sure the new `input.ini` file is set to "**Read Only**".

**Q**: Can't close the Tools/Items menu after holding down the Triangle key?

**Answer**: When selecting an item (with the right joystick), **tap R1 to close the menu**.

💡Mod background

The author created this quick fix because he didn't like the default button settings of the PS5 controller on PC and couldn't find an existing mod or in-game option to change the shield spell button to L1 (using DS4 or SteamInput would change the triangle button and L1 for spell input at the same time, which is unsatisfactory).

**Tip**: The author has not conducted extensive testing. No conflicts with other inputs were found in a brief trial of the new game, but they may exist. If you find any issues please let us know. I hope this mod can help people with the same needs!

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
