Mod merge checker

📖 Introduction

Some mods require "merging" using the Hogwarts Mod Merger program. But what are the needs? This can be difficult to tell if the modder hasn't told you that their mod needs to be merged, especially in the early days (especially before the Mod Merger program was created), as modders often *won't* tell you. don’t worry! This script can tell you which mods in the ~mods folder need to be merged.

The reason some mods need to be merged is because they modify the game's SQL data stored in the **`PhoenixShipData.sqlite`** file. But the game can only load one copy of the file, so if multiple mods try to import their modified versions, the last one loaded will overwrite all the others. The solution is to apply all the mod's changes to a single copy of this file and then load it into the game. That's exactly what the Hogwarts Mod Merger program does. But before using it, you need to know which files need to be merged.

This script finds out by unpacking each .pak file (except those with associated .utoc files, since they are different types of modules) and checking if there is a copy of the `PhoenixShipData.sqlite`** file inside. If there is, it will list the .pak file in **red**.

📦 Installation

  • **Download the module. **
  • Extract the **`ModMergerChecker.bat`** file and **`MANIFEST`** folder into your **`Steam\steamapps\common\Hogwarts Legacy\Phoenix\Content\Paks\~mods\`** folder.
  • Make sure that the **`ModMergerChecker.bat`** file and **`MANIFEST`** folder are correctly placed in **`Steam\steamapps\common\Hogwarts Legacy\Phoenix\Content\Paks\~mods\Phoenix\Content\Paks\~mods\`** by mistake!

If misplaced, move them to **`Steam\steamapps\common\Hogwarts Legacy\Phoenix\Content\Paks\~mods\`** and delete the redundant **`Steam\steamapps\common\Hogwarts Legacy\Phoenix\Content\Paks\~mods\Phoenix`** folders.

🚀 How to use - the easy way

**Method 1:**

  • Double-click **`ModMergerChecker.bat`** in Windows Explorer.

**Method 2:**

  • Hold down the **`ALT`** key and drag and drop **`ModMergerChecker.bat`** from Windows Explorer to your desktop.
  • This will create a shortcut. You can rename it as you like.
  • Double-click the shortcut to run the batch file.

🛠️ How to use - Advanced method

  • Open a cmd window.
  • Go to your ~mods folder.
  • Run **`ModMergerChecker.bat`**.

In other words, do as shown below (but adjust it based on the location of your ~mods folder). In my case, the ~mods folder was on my D: drive, so I needed to switch drives (using the "d:" command) and then `cd` to the correct folder. If your ~mods folder is on the C: drive, there is no need to switch drives.

As shown in the example above, I have eight pak files in my ~mods folder (or its subfolders) that need to be merged. I need to remove these eight pak files from the ~mods folder and merge them into a single **`zMergedMods.pak`** file using Hogwarts Mod Merger. When I run the game, this merged file should be the only such file in the ~mods folder.

❌ How to uninstall

Simply delete the **`ModMergerChecker.bat`** file from your **`~mods`** folder. You can also delete the **`MANIFEST`** folder, *unless* you have installed my PakChunk Checker or Mod Localization Checker mods, in which case please **leave** the **`MANIFEST`** folder or you will break those mods.

⚠️ Known issues

The following are known issues. If you encounter any other issues, please let me know in the POSTS section.

  • **Result:** **`pakchunk30(UETools) failed to unpack`** - This is nothing to worry about. UETools does not contain PhoenixShipData.sqlite.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
