HxD - Tools for editing a character's face, skin tone or wand
✨ Tired of your initial character look? Want to change your wand style at any time? This tool allows you to edit game saves directly and customize your Hogwarts students freely!
🛠️ Tool Introduction
HxD is a hex editor developed by **Maël Hörz**. This guide will teach you how to use it to modify your character's face, skin tone, and wand style and type in Hogwarts Legacy.
**⚠️ Important: Please read the steps carefully before modifying, especially the operation of "highlight replacement" rather than "backspace deletion". This is the key to avoid archive damage! **
🎭 Modify face and skin color
Follow these steps to easily change your character's face and skin tone:
- **Download and Installation**
- Download and install HxD tools. If you'd rather download from an official source for more peace of mind, visit:
- Install the tool wherever you like, this usually does not affect its operation.
- **Locate archive files**
- Run HxD and browse to your archive folder. The path is usually: `Appdata/Local/HogwartsLegacy/Saved/SaveGames/"your user ID"`.
- In the user ID folder, find your most recent archive file (e.g. `HL-00-00.sav`).
- **Find and edit values**
- Open the archive file with HxD and use `Ctrl+F` to turn on the Find function.
- **Modify face**: Search for the keyword `Headstyle`.
- **Modify Skin Color**: Search keyword `Skincolor`.
- Once found, you will see a string similar to `Player0HEADSTYLEFaceFemale002!`.
- **[Key Operations]**: **Highlight the number (such as `2` in `002`), and then enter the number you want directly. ** If the target number is two digits (such as 14), please **highlight** the preceding `0` and change it to `1`, and then highlight the following `2` and change it to `4`. **Never use Backspace or add extra numbers anywhere! **
- **Save changes**
- After editing, click `File` -> `Save` or press `Ctrl+S`.
- Exit the tool, launch the game and enjoy the new look!
🪄 Modify wand style and type
The steps for modifying the wand are slightly different as there are more numerical values involved and the numbering starts at 0 (whereas the face/skin color starts at 1). Please refer to the mod pictures for better understanding.
- **Find the base type of wand**
- After opening the archive, make sure "Search direction" is set to "All".
- Search for the keyword `playerwandbaset0` and click "Find All".
- After correct operation, you will get 4 results. Double-click on each entry and edit the `T00X_M0X` part (the X represents the value you want to change it to).
- **Again, highlight the X and change it, never use the backspace key. **
- **Find wand style**
- Use the search function again, search for the keyword `playerwandstylet0`, and click "Find All".
- After doing it correctly, you will get at least 2 results. Double-click on each entry to edit the `T00X_M0X` portion of it.
- **NOTE:** In these two entries, `T00X_M0X` ** will be followed ** by `H0YY_M0Y` (Y represents your current wand style value). **Please do not modify the `H0YY_M0Y` part! **
- **Again, highlight the X and change it, never use the backspace key. **
- **Save changes**
- After all modifications are completed, save the file and exit.
💡 Instructions and tips for use
- **Safe Backup**: HxD automatically creates `.bak` backup files for your saves while editing. If a modification error occurs, just delete the modified `.sav` file and rename the `.sav.bak` file without the `.bak` extension to recover.
- **Changes take effect**: Modifying the character's appearance in this way will affect all places where the character's face is displayed, including the main menu and equipment preview interfa …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
