Hogwarts Legacy Save Tool
📜 Version information
Check out the "Changelog" drop-down menu at the top of the page.
🧙♂️ Tool Introduction
Around March/April 2023, an official update to the game changed the format of save files, causing all save editors to become invalid and unusable to this day.
This module is a Windows command line tool whose mission is to convert archive files in the new format (compressed) back to the old format (uncompressed). You can use the old save editor to edit the unzipped file, and then use this tool to convert it back to a compressed format so the game can read it normally.
⚠️ **IMPORTANT WARNING**: Never try to load the unzipped save file directly into the game, it won't work! **Must recompress after editing**.
- It has been confirmed that unzipped archive files can be used with the following archive tools (bringing them "back to life"):
- Hogwarts Legacy Save Game Editor
- Hogwarts Legacy Save Editor
- Legilimens - The Hogwarts Legacy Collectible Finder
🙏 Acknowledgments
This tool was not created by me (@icouldifiwantedto), I just posted it on . The real credit goes to programmer **@katt** who generously put in a few weeks of his time despite never having played Hogwarts Legacy. Thank you so much @katt!
📥 Installation Guide
- Unzip the ZIP file and place the **HLSaveTool** folder in a convenient location.
- Download this file and place it in the **HLSaveTool** folder.
🛠️ Tutorial
- In Windows Explorer, go to: **C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Hogwarts Legacy\Saved\SaveGames\**
- You will see a folder named by an 8 or 9-digit number, that is your archive folder.
- Find the archive file you want to edit based on its creation date.
- Rename its extension from **.sav** to **.orig** (for example: `HL-03-05.sav` to `HL-03-05.orig`).
- Copy the file (e.g. `HL-03-05.orig`) to the **HLSaveTool** folder.
- First **left-click** on your **HLSaveTool** folder, then hold down the **SHIFT** key and **right-click** on it.
- Select "Open command window here" or "Open PowerShell window here" (whichever is available or whichever you are comfortable with), and then enter the following command in the new window that pops up:
- **Extract** your archive file, for example: `.\hlsaves.exe -d HL-03-05.orig HL-03-05.decomp`
- Edit the unzipped file using the editor of your choice (e.g. HLSGE) and save it with the **.edited** extension (e.g.: `HL-03-05.edited`).
- **Compress** the file you edited, for example: `.\hlsaves.exe -c HL-03-05.edited HL-03-05.sav`
- Copy the compressed file (eg: `HL-03-05.sav`) back to your archive folder.
The picture below is what the CMD window should look like after the operation is completed (but without color). The PowerShell window is similar.
🗑️ How to uninstall
Just delete the **HLSaveTool** folder directly.

⚠️ Known issues and error messages
The following are known issues. If you encounter other problems, please let us know in the post.
- The error message starts with **←31m** and ends with **←[0m**. These are control sequences. In modern terminals such as [Windows Terminal], they color the text. In older terminals like CMD it won't, but that's nothing to worry about.
- **[Error] LoadLibraryEx failed with error code 126**: Please see step 2 of the installation guide.
- **[Error] Expected SQLite signature "SQLite format 3" got "╔╔╔╔"**: You are trying to compress an archive file in a **new format** (i.e. a file that is already compressed).

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
