PerformanceTrafficControl

PerformanceTrafficControl (hereinafter referred to as PTC) is a lightweight performance framework designed to improve GTFO's frame time stability in high-intensity combat, a large number of enemies active at the same time, botanical garden scenes, dynamic fog changes, and visual effects-intensive scenes.

When the game is under normal load, PTC will try to maintain the original visual performance as much as possible; only after detecting sustained performance pressure, it will gradually reduce the secondary performance overhead caused by enemy shadows, corpse and ragdoll loads, botanical garden environment rendering, and dynamic fog effects. Once performance is restored, restorable visual settings are restored.

The current performance load will be divided into three stress levels:

  • Normal
  • High
  • Critical

The pressure level switching uses a hysteresis mechanism to prevent the Mod from frequently turning on or off optimization measures due to brief and harmless frame time fluctuations.

本 Mod 的目标并不是单纯追求尽可能高的 FPS 数字,而是减少严重的帧时间尖峰,并在场景负载异常升高时尽量维持游戏操作的流畅与响应性。

Enemy visual load optimization

The mod reduces the minor rendering overhead associated with enemy corpses when the system detects sustained performance pressure.

Current measures include:

  • Turn off shadows for cached enemy objects when the game is under performance stress.
  • Shortened corpse retention time in high load scenarios.
  • Limit the number of ragdolls active at the same time.
  • After performance recovery, restore enemy shadow settings recorded before entering stress mode.

These optimizations target visual and rendering overhead, not enemy combat attributes. This means that PTC does not modify enemy health, damage, spawn statistics, or level balance.

Botanical garden scene and dynamic fog optimization

In the 1.0.0 version update, PTC has added adaptive performance optimization for botanical garden scenes and dynamic fog changes.

When the system detects sustained high load, PTC will use the same performance pressure level as enemy visual optimization to dynamically downgrade high-cost environment objects and dynamic fog effects in the botanical garden scene to reduce the performance pressure caused by complex environment rendering and fog changes.

When performance is restored, the restorable environment and fog visual settings will return to normal, allowing low-load scenes to maintain the original picture performance as much as possible.

This feature only targets environmental visual effects and rendering overhead, and does not modify the level structure, mission objectives, enemy configuration, or any actual game mechanics.

WindVolume Capacity Protection

GTFO uses native fixed-capacity buffers for some WindVolume affectors. In scenes with extremely dense enemies or an unusually large number of visual effects, the number of affectors involved in the call may exceed what the original function can safely handle.

PTC temporarily excludes over-capacity affectors and restores them in the Finalizer before performing native fixed-capacity operations.

This mechanism is designed to improve stability in unusually dense scenes without permanently deleting or disabling affected objects.

~~Although PTC currently has no way to solve some other performance issues, such as the performance degradation caused by dynamic changes in botanical garden scenes/fogs~~, in the 1.0.0 version update, PTC can now dynamically downgrade botanical garden scene/fog dynamic changes in the same way as enemies to achieve the purpose of reducing performance pressure under high load conditions. On machines with different configurations and in the presence of a large number of enemies, it has shown a very considerable performance improvement, currently from RTX 2080 to RTX On the 5080 machine, even in scenes with 75+ enemies present, the frame loss was controlled with …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. Most mods rely on the game's mod loader — the usual route is a community mod manager (such as r2modman): pick this game, install, and it handles the loader and dependencies.
  3. For a manual install, put the mod files into the matching Mod / plugins folder inside the game directory.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; mods with listed dependencies need those installed as well.

Install locations vary a lot between mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
