The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) (informally known as "Ike") is a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier currently in service with the United States Navy. The ship was commissioned in 1977 and is the second of the ten Nimitz-class aircraft carriers currently in service. It is also the first ship named after the 34th President of the United States, Dwight Eisenhower. The ship was originally known simply as the USS Eisenhower, very similar to the lead ship of the class, the USS Nimitz, but the name was changed to its current form on May 25, 1970. [3] The carrier, like all others, was built at the Newport News Shipbuilding Company in Virginia to the same design as the lead ship, but the ship had been overhauled twice to bring it up to the standards of more recent construction.
