Purpose

Proximity text chat is a mode that allows nearby players to communicate with each other via text chat. (Other players must also install the mod) The range is 100 meters, slightly higher than the nameplate's rendering distance. Text chat is a feature I personally requested. Without any word from Bethesda on when this feature will arrive, I decided to add it myself.

Additional information

This mod is a work in progress and while I will make reasonable efforts to ensure there are no bugs, some users may occasionally encounter these bugs. There is no guarantee of server or client stability or crashes.

This mod only works due to using a third party server. The only information sent to the server is nearby players, your name (visible to everyone), and your message. None of this information is stored. Player clients do not interact with each other, all communication occurs on the server, which then relays messages to the appropriate player.

future plans

Add the ability to chat as a team or chat with friends.

Have an idea? Feel free to make suggestions!

I can only do some testing and if the chat server crashes it may take hours to reopen it.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
