More conspicuous color of unit position indicator points

by Chris Ihao·v1.0·Updated 2026-02-27

A UI module that makes it easier to see the available position indicators for each of your combat skills (attacks, buffs, etc.). With blue, red, and default templates included, you can easily choose the color that suits you best. I personally have color blindness, which may affect this issue, although it's usually fine in everyday life. Welcome to leave a message.

More conspicuous unit position indicator color

🎮 **A visual optimization module specially designed for "Darkest Dungeon"! **

If you're having a hard time seeing where your units have to stand to use a specific combat skill when you mouse over it, rest assured you're not alone in the world with this problem.

🔍 The problem

The **light yellow** used for most text in the game is also used for unit position indicator points. While the **red attack indicator dot** is very noticeable, the color basically blends in with the gray background, making it almost impossible to distinguish the two for me. I'm not sure if my color blindness affects this, but I think most people would benefit from using more defined colors in this area.

🛠️ Module principle

After some digging and trying, I finally found the relevant file that needed to be edited: **`colours.darkest`**. My mod is just a simple color edit and **shouldn't** change any other aspect of the game.

📂 Installation instructions

To make things easier, I placed a few folders containing the complete directory tree inside the uploaded zip file. All you need is:

  • Open the folder named with the color you want.
  • Copy the **`steam`** folder to `C:\Program Files (x86)` or where your Steam folder is located.

**Manual installation (optional):**

If you want to manually put it into your game folder, just click all the way in, find the **`colours.darkest`** file, and copy it into your game folder.

**💡 Tips:**

I've also included the default master file. If you decide to switch back to the normal color, just cover it with it. If you want to be 100% confident, you can back up the `colours.darkest` file in your `Steam\steamapps\common\DarkestDungeon\colours` folder.

🎨 Color contrast

**Here’s a quick comparison of the different colors:**

I hope my work helps some of you, and that you enjoy the game as much as I do!

cheers!

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
