Hero Roster Namelist Generator - Darkest Dungeon
🎮 **Tired of clicking and typing to name your hero one by one in the game? **
Have you ever wanted to name your hero after all your friends, but were too lazy to enter them manually in the game?
Now, with my brand new name list generator, you can do it quickly and efficiently!
---
✨ Program introduction
This handy program will take any names you enter into the program and organize them into a list. Once organized, it automatically formats the list into an `.xml` file - which is exactly the file format Darkest Dungeon uses to read name lists!
You can even import a text file that already has a list of names stored in it and extract each name directly from the file!
**The only requirement**: Make sure each name in the text file is on its own line.
Feel free to use it, you won't regret it! 😉

📝 Detailed explanation of usage steps
**⚠️ WARNING**: Before performing the following steps, be sure to back up the `"names.string_table.xml"` file in the `"\\steamapps\\common\\DarkestDungeon\\localization\\"` directory.
- **Place the program**: Copy `"Darkest Dungeon Namelist Generator.exe"` to the location you want. For example, you can copy to the `"steamapps\common\DarkestDungeon\localization"` directory.
- **Prepare text file (optional)**: If you are importing the name list from a text file, copy the text file to the same directory as the executable file. Make sure each name is on its own line in the text file.
- **Run the program**: Run `"Darkest Dungeon Namelist Generator.exe"` and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If importing a file, enter `"Format"` at the command prompt.
- If it is not imported, enter each name one by one, and press Enter after each input.
- **Import Details**: When importing, please make sure to enter the complete file name and its extension. If you want to use a list created in the program, enter `"CreatedList"`.
*The program is not case sensitive, but please do so at your own risk ;p
- I have attached `"testNames.txt"` as a sample test file for your reference.
- **Sort Options**: After successfully importing the list, the program will ask if sorting is required. Sorting will sort the names in ascending order.
- **Select file extension**: Select the extension you want the output file to use.
- **Tip**: Choose XML as this is the format used by Darkest Dungeon name lists.
- **Name the output file**:
- **⚠️ Warning again**: If you have not backed up before, please back up the `"names.string_table.xml"` file before this step.
- You can choose a custom file name for the output file. If you choose Custom, the program will use the name you enter and add the extension you specified in step 6 at the end.
- For example: `testOutputNames` -> `testOutputNames.xml`
- The final file name must be `"names.string_table.xml"`, so after backing up the original file, please rename the new file to this name.
- If you do not use a custom file name, the program will default to `"names.string_table.xml"`. If the `.exe` file is in the same directory as this file, this will directly overwrite the exis …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
