Workaround when returning to main menu with R&F and some mods
This is a quick fix for the following issues:
When some mods (not all) are enabled, and when using the R&F ruleset (vanilla games are not affected), some (i.e. "random") DLCs try to load their R&F compatibility files (like CivilizationName_Expansion1.xml) before the base data loads the DLC, causing the database to lock up due to missing references and sending the user back to the main menu.
The solution is just to replace the game's files with some editing of the .modinfo and manually set the load order to "2" for the files to update the DLCs for Rise and Fall. (Load order "1" also works and is used in some other versions of this fix)
IMPORTANT: This is not a universal fix, please check your Modding.log before using it
Activate all DLC, R&F and mods you are having problems with, then launch the game, after being sent back to the main menu, open the Modding.log with any text editor (like Notepad) (see How to get the log) and search for "Error: Unable to free save point", it will give you a file name like this:
code:
[1994494.475] UpdateDatabase - Loading data/Poland_Jadwiga_Expansion1.xml [1994494.483] Error: Unable to release savepoint.
Note that if any of the "Error: Unable to release savepoint". There is no reference to a file like this (Data/[DLC]_Expansion1.xml) in the logs, the fix won't work, the problem needs to be fixed elsewhere first (it should point to your mod)
You can ignore the lines starting with "Warning", they have nothing to do with the "Return to Main Menu" issue, Rise and Fall will trigger a lot of these lines even when no mods are active.
Installation (PC)
1/Download the attached fix.zip
2/ Extract to \Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier’s Civilization VI\DLC\ folder, replacing existing files
If you don't know the location of your Steam folder, you can go into "Your Library" on Steam, right-click Civilization VI and select "Properties", then "Local Files", then "Browse Local Files"
Installation (Mac)

Hey, I had a very similar problem on my Mac and I was able to solve it. While it's not guaranteed to be the same issue, it sounds very similar to known issues with Civ IV with post-R&F mods. Here's a link explaining the fix in detail (mostly PC-oriented instructions) and what it does: https:
//forums.civfanatics.com/reso...ng-to-main-menu-with-rf-and-some-mods.26701/
Now, unfortunately, the fix works slightly differently on Mac OSX due to the way game files are stored. You need to download the fix normally and extract it to any location that is easily accessible. You'll then want to follow the above forum instructions: "Go to 'Your Library' on Steam, right-click Civilization VI and select 'Properties', then select 'Local Files' then 'Browse Local Files'". This is a change for Mac users.
You should be in a folder with 3 projects, including "_CommonRedist", "Civilization VI" and "DLC". While the fix states that you should replace the files in this DLC folder, this doesn't work on Mac, trust me. Instead, right-click the application (labeled "Civilization VI") and click "Show Package Contents." You should now see a folder with several different options, go to the folder "Assets". Within this folder is another "DLC" folder, this is the folder where you want to install the fix. Get the files from the repair folder and drag them into the second DLC folder. It will prompt you to replace the file multiple times, allow it.
After you replace each file, you'll probably be done.
tl;dr The folder where the fix is installed here is located on the Mac
/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Civilization VI by Sid Meier/Civilization VI - Right click -> Show package contents -> Content/Assets/DLC
(Also please Gedemon point me in the right direction)

Uninstall fix, just verify Civilization of Civilization game files on Steam
This fix won't help you if:
- You crash to the desktop
- modding.log …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
