I think we all know at this point that Tech Tree could use some improvements. This will hopefully be a passable solution until Firaxis releases a patch.
Information such as "Envoy", "Boarding", "Improve earnings", etc. have been added to the screen. Be forewarned this mod is not comprehensive. Some skills unlocked through technology (travel boosts from printing, city defense, etc.) currently have no icons. Anyway, this mod should hopefully make things clearer.
Extract to Mods or DLC folder as needed. By default, the mod is set to active.

Some abilities that are unlocked via techs (Tourism boost from Printing, Urban Defenses, etc.) do not currently have icons. Regardless, this mod should hopefully make things clearer.
Extract to your Mods or DLC folders as you prefer. The mod is set to be active by default.
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
