Civ VI Reference
This document basically converts Civiledia into a table, along with some additional information from the civilization selection and government sections of the UI. It does not include the Civilpedia's "Game Concepts" section.
The things I don’t like about folklore are:
- Requires a lot of clicking and scrolling to get a piece of information.
- Because you can only view one thing at a time and have to scroll through an entry, it's hard to compare.
- It covers the middle of the game screen so you can't view the game at the same time.
Extensive internal linking allows you to access almost any content with a few clicks (usually 1-3).
By placing the data in table rows, you can see more than one thing, making things easier. The document has internal links that allow you to drill down from the data in any specific table row to what it references. While using Alt-Tab to view a single monitor is useful, it really shines with dual monitors, where you can have your game on one screen and your reference on the other. This allows you to view data *and* gameplay at the same time.
It is not designed for printing, and without a very good printer it may not print well due to the small text in the tables (8 point), the alternating table row shading to guide the eye, and the large number of small icons embedded in the text. In any case, printing it throws away one of the most powerful advantages, which is the large scale of internal links that can jump quickly.
Since we don't have access to the BLP files yet, all icons/graphics are generated via screenshots, followed by cropping, background removal, and in the case of white icons, color inversion to black. All graphics work is done in Paint.Net. It is formatted/written in MSWord and then imported into Libre Office for export to PDF.
There are two reasons to use PDF. In PDF you can select "Return" which doesn't exist in MSWord (at least in the older version I'm using - OfficeXP). The .doc table is also quite large due to the heavy use of text-embedded small icons (screenshot full size - shown reduced). I think the 113 MB+ size might be a hosting bandwidth issue. Converting to PDF reduces it to 13.6 MB.
With a few exceptions, the text is mostly excised verbatim from folk texts. The long list of many terrain types is often simplified to "must build on hills" or "cannot build on hills" to save space the size of a table row. Some longer sentences were reduced, and shorter phrasing meant the same thing as saving space. Instances of "Discover or conquer a city" were changed to "Found or conquer a city". Since Jungle is not currently an existing terrain type, instances of civilian use of "Jungle" were changed to "Rainforest". There may have been some other changes that I can't remember at the moment, but keeping as close to the folk text as possible was a goal.
If the folk text makes an error, the error is repeated in this document. I'd be happy to hear any questions or suggestions. I'd like to keep this document up to date as patches/DLC/expansion happen, but depending on how extensive they are, it may take me a lot of time to incorporate these changes.
Futures may also include appendices that add effects cross-references, so all existing things that affect a specific aspect of the game can be found. Currently, the Spy and Religious Apostle promotion section doesn't have anything tree-like, as I don't understand it well enough to represent it yet. Additional sections can be added as needed.
Here's hoping someone else finds this useful for catching all the changes in gameplay that Civ VI brings us...

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
