Overview
The Skill Expansion patch fixes some bugs or inconsistencies in character skills, primarily regarding the way they scale with levels and across the game. It's not about changing the balance of the game to my personal preference, but making it work as intended (or at least more consistently), which does improve some aspects of balance. The skills with the greatest impact are Phaselock and Ruin (Maya), Light the Fuse (Krieg), Deathtrap and all its damaging abilities (Gaige), Saber Turret and all its damaging abilities (Axton), Salvador (Stabilize her as she goes).
Regarding Deathtrap and Saber Turret, the main issue this patch addresses doesn't actually exist on console. Using the Skill Scaling Patch, their damage output should be the same (or close to) the same as on the console. This has a huge impact on their end game viability.
I've also added some fixes to balance out the inconsistencies caused by the increased level cap (80 + OP10). And optional (balanced) enhancement status affects UVHM and OP level damage.
Installation and compatibility
Use BLCMM to install skill expansion patches:
Install BLCMM
In BLCMM>Tools>Set the mod's Game Files: Enable Mod Support option, and any other options you might want.
Open SkillScalingPatch.blcm in BLCMM (or use File > Import Single mod if you want to combine it with other mods)
In BLCMM > File > Save As: Select "Open BL2 Binaries Directory" and save it under any name you like (e.g. mymods.txt)
Start your game. In the menu with new game, character selection, etc., press "Esc" to exit to the main menu.
Open the console (using the keys you selected when setting up the game files for mods in BLCMM) and enter for example "exec mymods.txt".
Close the console, press keys to continue, and you're good to go.
The skill scaling patch works as a standalone to reduce bugs in the vanilla experience and meet Deathtrap and Saber Turret the way they should (actually on console). You can also try using BLCMM to combine it with other mods. However, incompatibilities may arise if other mods affect skills modified by the skill scaling patch, or even skills in general. I recommend importing the Skill Scaling Patch after other mods, and disabling any changes that affect said skills in other mods.
The skill expansion patch (v1.0) is included in the unofficial community patch, starting with version 4.1. If you're using UCP 4.1, you already have most of the skill scaling patches. However, fixes for Phaselock, Immolate, Steady as Shees, Sterner Stuff, Electrical Burn, and Deathtrap's Shock of range attacks are not yet included in the UCP. If you want those, you can simply import the current version of Skill Scaling Patch as a single mod after UCP.
If for some reason you don't have the Lilith DLC, which increases the level cap to 80 + OP10, please use version 2.6 of this mod.
Detailed changes
You can find here all the damage values across different levels/games, on console and PC/mac (with or without the skill scaling patch). This site has not (yet?) updated the level cap.
The % bonuses given below can be multiplied with other bonuses you earn in the game (for example, +160% means any damage you do should be multiplied by 2.6). These values are given as examples at a specific level, but they evolve with character levels.
generally
General skill damage scaling.
Made destruction damage (elemental blast and DOT) scale like other skills, and removed the level 80 cap.
This also affects status effect damage done by some other skills (Blight Phoenix, Cloud Kill, Unf0rseen)
Damage is increased by +60% at level 30, +100% at level 50, +160% at 80, and +850% at OP10.
Adapt the UVHM-OP balance modifier to the new upper level limit.
Moved OP level-specific balance modifier to 81+ instead of 73+ to account for the new level cap.
This won't affect OP level difficulty, but will remove inconsistencies in the 73-80 level range.
The 73-80 level range is between 61-72 and OP l …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
