Mod manager for modifying PAK files in Resident Evil 2 Remake
usage:
Unzip the mod manager anywhere (if you upgraded from an old version, just extract it to the old version).
Before running the mod manager for the first time, make sure that all PAK files in your RE2 installation are unmodified (to do this easily, right-click the game in Steam and select "Verify File Integrity").
Copy the mods to "[modmanager]\Games\RE2R\Mods" (note that not all mods are compatible with the mod manager, it's up to the mod author to ensure).
Run mod manager, click "Manage Mods" and click on mods to install or uninstall them.
What to do if patching RE2 without the mod installed:
Click "Reread Game Archives" in the "manage mods" menu in the mod manager.
Installing and uninstalling the mod should work again. Please note that some mods may not be compatible with newer versions of the game.
What to do if RE2 is patched after installing mods:
Try uninstalling the mod via mod manager. You should receive different error messages regarding PAK files.
Turn on the "Force Uninstall" option at the top of the manage mods menu.
Click "Uninstall all mods".
This shouldn't be necessary, but as a precaution I recommend right-clicking the game in Steam and selecting "Verify File Integrity".
Click "Reread Game Archives" in the "manage mods" menu in the mod manager.
Installing and uninstalling the mod should work again. Please note that some mods may not be compatible with newer versions of the game.
Troubleshooting Guide:
If you get an error message that the mod manager cannot open the file for writing, try running it as administrator (right-click on the exe and select "Run as administrator").
If you receive an error message when launching the mod manager, please download this C++ runtime library: =15336
If you receive an error message about a PAK file when trying to install a mod, try the following: Uninstall all mods in Steam, "Verify file integrity" and then select "Reread save game" in the mod manager.
If the mod manager complains about finding PAK files that are too small, then go to the location where the game is installed and delete any PAK files with a size of 0.
If you are unable to download or run the mod manager, try temporarily disabling or whitelisting your antivirus software.
Info from mod creator:
I've included a RE2 mod (Alternate Rebecca Photo.rar) in the mod manager, which is a good example of how to assemble mods for the mod manager.
Note that the modinfo.ini file is optional (as are all entries in it).
Even if modinfo.ini does not exist, the Mod Manager will always check for "screenshot.jpg" or "screenshot.png" to use as the mod preview image.
It is highly recommended that you compress your mods into a RAR archive and set the "solid archive" option to off (which should be the default).
If anyone is curious, here's how the mod manager works for RE2 in detail:
It will process the mod's filenames and try to find them in the game's PAK file (it searches for them the same way the game does, by calculating a hash based on the file path).
If matching entries are found, it invalidates those entries in the PAK file so the game cannot find them and therefore attempts to load files outside of the PAK file.
It then copies the mod files to the game directory.
Uninstalling a mod works in a very similar way (it will re-validate the entries in the PAK file using cached information about the PAK file) and automatically delete the mod file (or restore a backup of the original file).
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
